Providing Educational, Emotional, and Social Support for Children and Families in Every Tennessee County.
Tennessee's 29 Head Start programs serve more than 20,000 children and their families every year with comprehensive educational, social and health programs for children, plus programs for family and community development. One or more Head Start classrooms are operated by government, private, faith-based, and charitable organizations in every county in the state.
In all, Head Start operates 936 classrooms in 367 pre-school centers. Head Start is aimed specifically at high-risk children, typically those from low-income families in which parents are out of a job or are working, single parents.
Northwest Tennessee Economic Development Council (NWTEDC) has proudly served as the Head Start grantee for Northwest Tennessee since 1965. Please be advised that, effective July 1, 2021, Save the Children Head Start has become the new Head Start grantee for the counties of Crockett, Dyer, Fayette, Lauderdale, and Tipton Counties. NWTEDC will continue to provide Head Start services in the counties of Benton, Carroll, Gibson, Henry, Lake, Madison, Obion and Weakley Counties.
Head Start and Early Head Start services are scheduled to begin in the fall. If your child is eligible to return to Head Start this fall, Save the Children Head Start will be in touch soon with details about the 2021-2022 program year.
